Create or update your resume (only for youth ages 16-21)
If you are between the ages of 16 and 21, you will need to bring a resume to your enrollment appointment.

* If you do not have a resume, you will need to create one. If you already have a resume, review it to make sure it is up-to-date. Have your resume reviewed by an adult.

Register with Selective Service
If you are a male who will be 18 during the summer, you will need to register with selective service:

* Visit http://www.sss.gov and click “Register Online”
* Print the page with your registration number
OR
* Visit your local Post Office to fill out a Selective Service Registration form

Note about Work Permit
If you will be 18 years old, or older as of July 6, 2010 you will not need a work permit. If you have a blue work permit or a yellow work permit listing WorkReady Philadelphia, PYN or the Philadelphia Youth Network as the employer, you do not need to take any action. If you do not have a work permit, you will receive instructions with the application.

Seth Williams, Candidate for Philadelphia District Attorney, Removed from Ballot

In a recent upset in the race for Philadelphia District Attorney, Candidate, Seth Williams is thrown off of the ballot. Here is his letter to his supporters:

"Friends:

Today, a Philadelphia Common Pleas judge broke new legal ground when he issued two rulings - one removing me from the ballot and a second keeping Mike Turner on it.

Disappointed does not begin to describe my feeling at the moment.

Outrage does.

The judge ruled that in a challenge to my statement of financial interests by Danny McCaffery's campaign that I failed to disclose as "income" reimbursements I received for expenditures I made on behalf of my campaign.

Of course I didn't list them - because they're not income.

Reimbursements are not considered income by the Internal Revenue Service, the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue or the Pennsylvania Ethics Commission. Moreover, the reimbursements were fully disclosed in a separate document I filed with the state - a public documents.

The judge's decision is baffling and will be appealed.

In a second decision, the same judge ruled that Mike Turner could stay on the ballot because the judge allowed signatures that were on petitions notarized by a New Jersey notary and signatures of individuals that were not registered at the address they listed.

That also is not the law. New Jersey notaries can't notarize petitions in Pennsylvania, and you have to list the address where you are registered when you sign a petition.

But I am going to keep fighting - it's too important not to.

Philadelphia's criminal justice system is fundamentally broken, and we need change. We lead the nation in the rate of homicide by handguns. 59 percent of all felonies aren't prosecuted - because the D.A.'s Office isn't ready. Our criminal justice system is a revolving door that allows 60 percent of the crime to be committed by 5 percent of the people. We can't have another District Attorney that turns a blind eye to corruption because fighting it would hurt her politically.

In the coming days, I will be fighting back against these decisions. I hope you will continue to support me.

Mayor Nutter, Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation Announce Public-Private Partnership to Preserve Ice Rinks

Nutter and Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider announced that the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation (ESYHF) will take over operation and programming of three ice-skating rinks targeted by the City for possible closure. Under the agreement, ESYHF will oversee all ice hockey programs at the Scanlon Ice Rink, the Laura Sims Skatehouse at Cobbs Creek, and the Rink at Simons Recreation and Teen Access Center.

The Foundation will provide free ice hockey instruction and leagues, including all equipment, as well supplemental academic services at no charge to participants. The Philadelphia Department of Recreation will continue to maintain the rinks.

“This agreement is an example of a great public-private partnership,” said Mayor Nutter. “I am pleased that the Snider Foundation is able to work with the City to keep these rinks open and accessible to the community. In this budget climate, we need to be more creative about how we provide services.”

The new partnership also expands general access to the rinks three afternoons per week at the Rizzo Rink and the Tarken Rink and access to ice on weekday mornings at all five City rinks. This will enable the Foundation to expand its School Day sessions, which provide physical education programming for many of the Philadelphia public schools that are within close proximity to these sites. Entrance and equipment will be provided free of charge during these periods.

“If the end product of this partnership is that boys and girls go on to play for competitive club, scholastic or even collegiate hockey teams, that would be great,” said Ed Snider. “But more significant are the thousands of young people who will learn the importance of staying in school, staying on a progressive path, and the need to give back to their communities. These children will someday help to build a stronger Philadelphia.”

“This is very exciting. The residents of the surrounding communities will gain a first-class program run by the most respected youth hockey organization in the region,” added Recreation Commissioner Susan Slawson. “What has impressed me most about ESYHF is its supplemental educational services, including its nationally acclaimed life skills curriculum.”

The Foundation is also working with the City to procure land for a hub facility, encompassing a state-of-the-art computer lab, classrooms, administrative offices, and multiple ice surfaces. The facility will also include public space designated for meetings and other related community functions.

“We are thrilled by this alliance,” said Scott Tharp, President of the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation. “This is a win-win situation. ESYHF will gain access to much needed ice time, and ESYHF, in turn, will relieve the Department of Recreation of the overhead needed to staff its hockey programs. Being recognized as the official youth hockey provider for the City of Philadelphia marks the achievement of one of the Foundation’s initial goals.”

Philadelphia Flyers founder Ed Snider created the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation in 2005 as a personal commitment to provide opportunities to those who would otherwise not have such options. The Foundation has experienced rapid growth and uses hockey as its hook to gain and hold the attention of its young people, bringing inner-city children together resulting in positive youth development.

The mission of the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation is to use the sport of hockey to help educate young people on how to succeed in the game of life.

Telephone Harassment By Bill Collectors-

Follow these four steps and you can stop the harassment immediately:

A. Answer the phone and get the bill collector’s personal name, the bill collector’s company name, the bill collector’s company phone number, the bill collector’s company address, and the account number for the debt you owe. After you get that information, say the following to the bill collector: “I demand that you, your company, and anyone connected directly or indirectly with you or your company immediately stop all attempts to reach me at any telephone number.” (Once you say that, do not argue with the bill collector. Instead, just quickly hang up the phone.)

B. Write a letter to that bill collector stating the following:

I demand that you, your company, and anyone connected directly or indirectly with you or your company immediately stop all attempts to reach me at any telephone number. (Make sure you keep two copies of that letter, and send the original by certified, return-receipt postage so that you can get the green U. S. postal card back in order to have proof that the company actually received your letter.)

C. Call the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Agency

at (215)560-2414, and tell the agency that you want to file a complaint

against the bill collector’s company. The agency will mail a complaint

form to you. When you receive that form, write all of the information

you have regarding the dates and times that the bill collector’s company

called you and regarding what was said to you or on your voice

mail/answering machine during each of those calls. Attach a copy of

your letter to that form. (Make sure you keep a copy of that form.)

D. If the bill collector’s company calls you after it has received your

certified, return-receipt letter, make sure you document each call by

using your voice mail/answering machine and/or your caller I.D. If you

do not have a voice mail/answering machine, make sure you write the

date and time of those calls. Report all of this to the Attorney General’s

Office, and the bill collector’s company might be ordered to pay you!

Philadelphia will feel another five-day heat wave at the Wachovia Center as three hot concerts – Coldplay, George Michael, and the Police - are set to rock the stage from Friday, July 25 through Tuesday, July 29.

Coldplay will bring their “Viva La Vida” tour to the Wachovia Center on Friday, July 25; George Michael performs live on Saturday, July 26; and the Police make their long-awaited return on Tuesday, July 29.

Coldplay’s newest album, “Viva La Vida,” was released by Capitol Music Group on June 17. Produced by Brian Eno and Markus Dravs, the record has topped the charts in 36 countries around the world. This is a rescheduled date from earlier in June. All tickets from the original date will be honored.

Michael brings his long awaited “25 Live” Tour to the Wachovia Center after performing for a staggering 1.3 million fans this year alone. He has enjoyed one of the most successful and enduring careers in the history of pop music, selling more than 85 million records globally and encompassing seven US No. 1 singles, two Grammy awards, three American Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award and two prestigious Ivor Novello awards for songwriting. Center for Progressive Leadership Announces...new leadership!

On July 7th of 2008, Haile Johnston, a community organizer in North Philadelphia and a 2007 CPL Pennsylvania Political Leaders Fellow, will be joining CPL as the new Pennsylvania State Director for the Center for Progressive Leadership.

When we started the search process, we were looking for someone who could bring a long-term vision for leadership development to the progressive movement in Pennsylvania, the management experience to build a sustainable organization, and the background to be able to engage new, diverse communities in our work.

In Haile, we found someone who could bring each of those things.

Haile has a diverse background working for progressive change in the for-profit, non-profit, and public sector. In all of his work, he has consistently found ways to use grassroots, community-based strategies to get new people involved in the fight for progressive change.

We were fortunate to have an incredible pool of applicants to choose from.

Elected officials, organizational leaders, nonprofit directors, donors, and political leaders recommended individuals, reached out to their networks, and spread the word about the job opening. Our alumni hosted state-wide conference calls, sent scores of emails, sent up meetings for CPL staff, and helped look under every rock for the kind of individual we were looking for. Almost 200 individuals were directly involved in the search process.

CPL has a strong network of support in Pennsylvania. Now, we also have a talented director to build on that foundation.

Over the course of the next several months, Haile will be reaching out to the CPL network in Pennsylvania to talk about the upcoming year, figure out the challenges and opportunities in the state, and lay out the priorities for 2008 as we continue to try and build a powerful movement of diverse leaders committed to a more progressive Pennsylvania.

On Wednesday, June 18, Ahmeenah Young, was appointed to the position of chief executive officer of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority (PCCA). Ms. Young is also the NFBPA Greater Philadelphia Chapter Vice President.

Ms. Young has been an Affirmative Action Officer. Today, as one of only two Black women in the United States heading a convention center, she represents the height one can achieve in the field of public administration.

Ahmeenah Young, of the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, co-owner of North by Northwest and member of the board of directors of Mt. Airy USA, the local non-profit community development corporation. Young also serves on the boards of the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition, Philadelphia Forward, Philadelphia Academies, Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO), North Philadelphia Health Systems and the Lotus Academy.

It's no secret that our young people in Philadelphia need help. Many of our young people in Philadelphia have little to no responsible male guidance. Fortunately, there are groups like M.A.N. M.A.N. helps to support our young people through special events that helps to partner them with conscious responsible male role models. During an upcoming poetry event, you can witness this yourself.

Please help spread the word to mothers with troubled teens and men!

The poetry event is for at-risk or truant young men between the ages of 13-24. However, men that are interested in signing up to become mentors can join M.A.N. representatives at the Fatherhood Festival taking place the same date at the Convention Center.

Philly, is the Summer over?

Well, it's the end of the Labor Day weekend and the summer is unofficially over here in Philadelphia :(.

But, don't feel bad. There is still plenty more fun to be had! Think about it. Autumn in the City of Brotherly Love can be SPECTACULAR! There is pumpkin picking and carving. Mmmm. Just the thought of those pumpkin pies!

Oh! That reminds me! Don't forget to visit the Reading Terminal this Fall season. If no one has told you, the Reading Terminal is the BEST kept secret in Philadelphia. But, remember the Amish counters are closed on Mondays (I made the mistake of going to the Reading Terminal on a Monday and boy was I disappointed).

The Reading Terminal has the freshes cakes, pies, meats, fruits and vegetables. You can eat in or take out. Oh my gosh! There is a diner there that has the biggest and BEST apple tarts in the whole country.

Really think about it....when is the last time you've been to Philadelphia's Art Museum??

I've only been 3 times in the past 5 years. But, guess what? I'll be there this weekend!

Going to the art museum can be so much fun and very educational. Right now they have an exhibit on Tibetan Art. The exhibit is called, "Tibetan Ritual Art" presents rarely-seen Tibetan-Buddist ritual images and implements.

I know zero about Tibet, so this should be a great adventure for me.

The exhibit will be there through November 30.

Hot Time in Philly

Whew! It's really hott in Philly today! Well, it's not really the heat, it's the humidity. LOL.

To cool off here in Philadelphia, you need a water ice. Philadelphia is known for it's pretezel and delicious water ice. You can find a water ice stand on just about every corner here in Philly.

I think that it's part of Philadelphia's charter that everyone must have at least 2 water ices every 5 days between the months of May and September. Well, it should be part of the charter, anyway.

I'm doing my part. I have a Philly water ice 3 times of week.

As you know, Philadelphia is a city full of "doers". Which means, we like to help each other.

Sometimes, we need help in return. So, if you have an organization that is looking for interns or volunteers and you need some support call the Center for Internships and Career Development in the College of Liberal Arts at Philadelphia's Temple University.

These Philadelphia students are interested in organizations that may have internships/volunteer programs.
